Following the Spanish-American War, the United States gained several pieces of territory from Spain which included Puerto Rico and Guam. This was because the United States gained all of Spain's colonies outside of Africa, except Cuba which became the protectorate of the United States. Spain was evidently outraged by this move but knew it was part of the peace negotiations.
