    In addition to founding the city of Quebec, Samuel de Champlain was the first European to explore the Great Lakes. Samuel de Champlain was born on 13th August 1574 and died on 25th December 1635. He is also well known as "The Father of New France". He was a multifaceted and multidimensional person. He was a great navigator, a soldier, geographer etc. He was born in a family that consisted of established mariners. While he was only a young man, he started out to explore North America in the year 1603 under the able guidance of his uncle.
