Japan created the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere because they needed to expand and take territory to provide industrial materials to the Japanese mainland. Japan has very few sources of resources such as coal and rubber. As such, the Japanese created the Sphere as a form of imperialism to conquer and exploit other regions in Asia.
