    John Brown was the abolitionist captured at Harper's Ferry, Virginia. He believed the only way for blacks to be liberated from the institution of slavery was by overthrowing white rule and through insurrection. He planned to do this at night in Harper's Ferry with a few armed slaves, but a doctor who they met along the way and who they eventually let go notified people in different towns and John Brown was captured, tried and killed.
