    What gave rise to the slave trade was C) The death of many American Indians to disease and the planting of labor-intensive crops. The colonists soon realized that the American Indians were not able to do the hard labor they wanted them to do and were soon dying from various diseases the Europeans had brought over which they were not immune to.
