The Supreme Court in 1882 allowed Cherokee Indians to hold a sovereign nation in the 1832 decision of the famous Worcester v. Georgia case. It basically allowed the Native Americans to remain settled where they were. However, it didn't stop Andrew Jackson's Indian Removal Act, forcing the Cherokees to go on the infamous Trail of Tears. This decision allowed the Cherokee tribe to remain a sovereign nation and remain settled where they were. However, Andrew Jackson basically challenged the supreme court's decision. They made the ruling, but they didn't have a way to enforce it, therefore, the trail of tears was the result.
