The Key events that resulted in the split of the two groups was when the last Caliph Ali bin Abu Talib was ruling. The Shi'so and Sunnis had many disagreements during his rule and resulted in a battle were Ali died. After that, the two groups argued over who should rule next. Sunnis said an elected member should rule. The Shi'so said someone from the Prophet Muhammad's family should rule.
