Why did the U. S. Build the Panama Canal through Panama?

    The Panama Canal was a shortcut for ships to take so it would be easier for trade. Before the Panama Canal, ships had to go around the whole U. S. just to get to their destination.

    So there would be a faster way to transport things from the Atlantic to the Pacific coasts
