With respect to the federal constitution, The Jeffersonian Republicans are usually characterized as strict constructionists who were opposed to the broad constructionism of the federalist's. To what extent was his characterization of the two parties accurate during the presidencies of Jefferson and Madison?

    It could be argued that this characterization was fairly accurate during this time, since this was the first time that a true two-party system existed in the United States, although of course individuals within each party varied significantly on how much they supported their party platform.
