Immigration centers were built on both sides of the US to accommodate flows of immigrants coming into major ports.

Geographically, Asia is closer to California and San Francisco was built as a immigration port for Asian immigrants. Angel Island was not as busy as Ellis Island but did see many Chinese and Japanese immigrants while it was open. Ellis Island, off of New York City, is geographically close to Europe and was a common port for immigrants. Ellis Island processed thousands of immigrants from all over Europe while in operation.
