Why did presidents in both parties continue to send troops and supplies to fight in Vietnam?

The Capitalist US, regardless of party, wanted to prevent the spread of communism. Both parties supported sending troops and supplies to support south Vietnam to prevent the domino effect, the belief that communism would spread to neighboring countries.
