Base on the question and in my further research, I would say that the answer would be that b oth sides wanted to gain something. Due to the Compromise. The slave trade was abolished in the District of Columbia. The Territory of New Mexico and the Territory of Utah were organized under the rule of popular sovereignty. And the Fugitive Slave Act was passed.
