The Electoral College is an example of indirect election, or a proces in which voters in an election do not actually choose between candidates for an office but rather elect persons who will then make the choice. American presidential elections are not decided by popular vote. The members of the Electoral College are divided by represented states and are scaled based on the population from each state.
