The Court had to decide whether an African-American, slaves or not, whose ancestors were bought and imported into the United States as slaves and were later sold as such could be counted as citizens of the United States. This also included their right to be represented in the federal court and that the government could not in the federal territories that were admitted in the Union after the original creation of the United States regulate slavery. Scott was in the free, brought there by his slavers and he wanted to sue them there for his freedom. The court rejected his request. This case one of the many things that contributed to the Civil War as the abolitionists movements in the North were against this verdict.
