Hitler did a lot of nasty stuff to ramp up his military efforts in the late 1930's. Most prominently, he began building up the German military, which was alarming to a world that had grown leery of German military power in the wake of the First World War. But Hitler also invaded the Sudetenland, which is a part of what is now the Czech Republic. Hitler justified doing so by saying that there was a large number of German speakers in that region who deserved to be a part of a German state. Hitler also annexed Austria in an event called the Anschluss. This move was another attempt by Hitler to create a sprawling German-speaking state for the so-called Aryan race.
