How did the slave ships manage to get so many captive Africans? Portuguese and Spanish traders captured Africans from the western and southern coasts of Africa. Slave ships bought African captives from English and Spanish pirate ships. Slave ships carried large armies to conquer African villages and enslave their entire populations. Africans along the western coast made raids inland to capture other Africans for sale to the slave ships.
