Name the greatest reason the US wanted to acquire New Orleans during The Louisiana Purchase and why was it so important

The reasons were because the US believed that someone else, who could be their enemy, could establish their own colonies in the area. Either Spain who was there before the French, or England who would ask for the territories as payment for winning against the French. Either way, the US would be in serious troubles.
