What change was taking place in how the colonists saw themselves?

Assuming that this is referring to the same timeframe that was posted before with this question, the correct response would be that they were coming to see themselves as far more independent, instead of being simply British subjects--due mostly to the fact that Britain had practiced a fairly "hands off" policy.
