Why did the british support the new independent nations of latin america?

    At the time trade from the colonies was limited to Spain. Though Britain was an ally of Spain at the end of Napoleonic wars they wanted to open up the trade from the colonies. In 1823 the British government let Spain know that they were sending troops to South America.
