Almost immediately after the Boston Tea Party, the British Parliament in 1774 passed the punitive laws known as the Intolerable Acts or Coercive Acts.

The Intolerable Acts were meant as punishment to the Massachusetts colonists who participated in the Boston Tea Party. It took away the historic and self-government rights of Massachusetts.

The stripping of the rights enraged the thirteen colonies which led to their revolt. The revolts signaled the beginning of the American Revolution in 1775.
