Why did Alexander the Great pour a helmet full of precious water into the desert sand even though he was thirsty?

    It was Alexander the Great's way of sympathizing and empathizing with the plight of his men. He would rather suffer thirst with his men, than quench his thirst and know that his men are thirsty with no available water to satisfy their thirst.
