in Jamestown the first permanent settlement there was a shortage of food because the main crop was tobacco and the death rate was extremely high. it was considered a miracle to live to 50 because of the infections such as malaria, typhoid fever, etc. Also the male to female ratio was 3 to 2 so population was not rising quick.

The problems faced were the problem of malaria, which many died from. They also had shortages of food. These could be resolved by staying clean.
