Britain had a dream of building a railroad from the Mediterranean Sea to South Africa (i. e. from Cairo to Cape Town). Which country was in the strongest position to block this from happening?

    This would be Portugal.

    Portugal had two strategically placed colonies in Africa: Mozambique and Angola. They were placed on both sides of the continent and if they managed to claim the land between the two colonies, they would pose an obstacle for the British plans.
