What was expected of the colonists through the new quartering act passed in 1774 as part of the coercive acts was that government people and citizens alike had to quarter soldiers in their house, but if their house was not available, than they had to quarter them in inns and barns and other structures which may have been inhabited. However, the act did not apply to all provinces.
