    V Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independence that "all men are created equal" yet he owned a large number of slaves.

    v He did not like the British but he was willing to turn to their support and create a permanent alliance with them if Napoleon's expedition had been successful

    v Jefferson was trying to cut costs and government spending and such but by buying the Louisiana territory, he used government money

    v he was an agrarian, individualist, and advocated for limited government, yet served in three national offices - including the presidency-and expanded the country greatly with this purchase
