The answer is natural rights. The constitution was heavily inspired by Enlightenment thinkers such as John Locke who proposed the concept of social contracts where citizens must give up certain liberties in order to obtain protection from the government while still maintaining their natural rights. This created debate amongst those founding fathers who feared strong central government taking away most freedoms and were against the constitution originally. To compromise, an agreement was met that the Bill of Rights (first ten amendments) would uphold the natural rights of the citizen including freedom of speech, press, and religion.
