Seals played a very important role in the Harappan civilization. Seals often had holes so that the user could pass a thread through it and wear the seal. The seals probably carried information about the owner's position, clan, and status. Seals were used to stamp important items for trade, such as packages or goods. They may also have been used to seal contracts. Most seals were found in large numbers near the city gates.
