The United States wanted their land for agriculture (sugar for the most part). The U. S. wanted to keep Pearl Harbor (Which was bombed) within Hawaii to make the U. S. stronger in trade and war, by making Hawaii a fuel reststop. Hawaii was small and weak and hardly had a chance to fight.
