The name "Indian" comes from the river, Indus, which in turn comes from the word "Sindhu" meaning "sea, water".

American Indigenous people are sometimes referred to as Indians because Columbus called them so, since he thought that he had reached India, not discovered a new continent.

Before they were called Indian, that is, before Columbus, they all called themselves in their indigenous languages, typically something along the line of "speakers of the language".

Blackfood Indians are a tribe of Indigenous Americans, called so after the colour of the souls of their shoes. Their own name for themselves is "Niitsitapi"-meaning "original people"
