The enlightenment philosopher who introduced the idea that people enter a social contract with the purpose of maintaining order in society was French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. In one of his most important books, "The Social Contract", published in 1762., he claimed that the state of nature was a primitive condition without law and morality, and that human beings left it for the benefits of necessity and cooperation. The legendary first sentence of this Rousseau's work says: "Man are born free, yet everywhere are in chains."
