How did some Christians respond when wealthy people begin to influence the church

Well in the Fall of Rome the education was falling and the churches or Christians saved education from fading so wealthy like nobles or kings would have had a church in there area so they could spread or learn more about their religion so they were probrobly either suprised or influenced.
