    Britain was still at war with France, and it needed funds. So King George raised taxes on the colonies and justified them by saying that the colonies needed to pay Britain back for defending the colonists. This is, of course, paraphrasing. Obviously, the colonists did not take well to the tax hikes, as demonstrated by the Boston Tea Party.
