In hockey what occurs when a player from one team must sit out due to a penalty?

    The player get's sent to the penalty box for a certain amount of minutes. (most commonly 5)

    The team usually doesn't bring in another player, leaving them one short, in this case the opposing team will be on something called a "power play" and the short-handed team is on "penalty killing" until the player comes back.
