The fur trade has played an important role in Louisiana's economy. In the early 1700s, New Orleans was a major fur trading center. In the late 1940s, the most commonly trapped fur was muskrat. Ten years later, nutria passed muskrat in numbers and value. European demand for nutria kept prices high. However, in 1955, the prices for nutria dropped because

    One of the most commonly used forms of industry in New Orleans during the 18th century was fur farming. By definition, a fur farming usually takes place when different kinds of animals were bred in order for their fur to be used. In addition, the demand of the fur industry eventually dropped during the 1950's.
