The velvet revolution took place from November 17 to December 29 1989 in Czechoslovakia. It was a peaceful and bloodless overthrow of the Czechoslovak communist regime. The revolution began as legal rally to commemorate the death of Juan Opletal but instead turned into a demonstration demanding democratic reform. Student demonstrators offered flowers to riot police and showed no resistance, but were beaten by police. The public reacted by supporting the student and labor unions joined in, in a massive protest that made the president resign.
