How did the physical geography of Greece cause Greek-speaking peoples to develop separate, isolated communities?

    The thing is that Greece is composed of islands and the mainland, which in turn has a lot of mountains separated by valleys, and this lead to the situation that it was easy to defend one's community but hard to have a regular contact to other communities: this supported the isolation.
