    The correct answer should be the Sharecropping system. Basically, the African-Americans were poor and uneducated but they were free. They lived on land owned by the white people and dealt in agriculture but had to share the crops with the land owners because the land wasn't theirs. This was exploited by white racists who couldn't bother the Africans since they weren't slaves, but they could make their lives harder.
