    Unlike Portuguese explorers, Columbus believed that he could get to Asia more quickly by sailing west rather than east.

    The Portuguese searched for Asia going west, sailing around the southern tip of Africa, whereas Columbus went west, which is the reason he came across America whilst searching for India.
