How did the Aztecs build and control their empire?

The Aztecs built their empire through military conquest. They controlled their empire primarily through indirect rule. This means that when the Aztecs conquered a group of people, instead of subjecting them to Aztec rule, laws, and customs, they would allow local rulers to continue ruling; however, they would require those local rulers to pay tribute to the Aztecs.
