How did the miranda v. arizona case travel up to the court system?

Well miranda was charged by the state of arizona, but he argued that his rights were violated (5th amendment i believe) and so the case went to the supreme court because it wad a case against a state. Miranda won the case, and the miranda rights became a thing, which allowed people the option to not self incriminate themselves, or speak and confess to a crime without a lawyer.
