    There were many reasons, one of which related to slavery. It was going to be claimed approximately at the same time as Texas and since southerners wanted Texas to be claimed as a slave state, they needed Oregon to be a non-slave state to balance things out. If it wasn't taken, then the slave states would have more power than the non-slave ones in the congress.
