How did art and literature in late sixteenth and seventeenth century europe reflect the political and religous conflicts of the time?

During the late 16th and 17th century, the Wars of Religions happened in Europe. Political conflicts arose from the different religions that were established which challenged the Roman Catholic church. Art and literature showed defiance and challenge to the common catholic symbols.
