Ulysses S. Grant was given command of the Union Army by President Abraham Lincoln for his victories in Donaldson, Shiloh, Vicksburg and Chattanooga. He fought a war of attrition inflicting heavy casualties on Confederate forces commanded by General Robert E. until he finally trapped Lee at Petersburg. With General Sherman destroying the South and Grant keeping him pinned at Petersburg, Lee eventually surrendered and the War came to an end in 1865. Grant had many great qualities as a general. Lincoln had faith in him because Grant was a fighter. John Fremont called Grant a man of iron will. One of the great qualities of Ulysses Grant was that he was very calm in times of crisis. He would look over a situation and take the necessary actions to resolve it.
