Share cropping was an alternative form of slavery. since former slaves had no where to go and no money to buy there own land, former slaves owners would alow former slaves to work the land as there own, but the land owner would take a percentage of the crop plus interest and fees for allowing them to farm forcing the former slaves to pretty much work the land for free ... forever, making them essentially slaves again ... legally.
