The Federalists wanted a Constitution that would create a stronger central government that would be able to prevent the weaknesses they saw in government under the Articles of Confederation. The Anti-Federalists wanted the central government to remain weaker and for the states to retain most of the power to prevent "monarchical" type rule similar to what occurred when the colonies were controlled by the British. They had numerous reasons to support and not support the Constitution but most centered around their main ideological positions in regards to state and federal rights.
