They both used to be the same religion however they broke up into Catholicism and Orthodoxy, led by Pope in Rome and the Patriarch in Byzantium, respectively. Orthodoxy was mostly accepted in Eastern European countries such as Russia and other Slavic countries, while western Europe adopted Catholicism and supported the Pope.
