    Between 1828 and 1869, the Democratic Party won all presidential elections except for 1840 and 1848. In 1840, William Henry Harrison of the Whig Party defeated Martin Van Buren of the Democratic Party. In 1848, Zachery Taylor of the Whig Party defeated Lewis Cass of the Democratic Party and Martin Van Buren, then of the Free Soil Party.
