The fifth amendment protects Americans from being tried more than once for a crime, being forced to testify to prove their own guilt. in simple terms the 5th amendment means, a person committing a capital crime will have a trial before a grand jury and cannot be punished unless this jury finds him guilty. The only exception to this are military trials. No person shall go to trial for the same crime twice aka double jeopardy. No person will be "a witness against himself." Nothing you say can be used against you unless its a legal statement. The 5th amendment guarantees due process of law, or you will get a speedy trial and not allowed to sit in jail for an extended period of time without seeing a judge. This includes non-US citizens. Lastly, the 5th amendment protects you from eminent domain. The state has the right to take something from you - your house to build a highway, for example - but must provide you with something of equal compensation - another house.
