An indentured servant brought to Jamestown and other colonies was given freedom once they completed the amount of years on their contract.

An indentured servant was an individual who had their trip to the New World paid for by a farm owner. As a way to pay the farm owner back, the servant would work on the land of the farm owner for anywhere between 4 and 7 years. After the servant completed their time working for the farm owner, they were then free. Usually, these servants were given a small piece of land to start their own farm on after they were finished with their contract.
