Why were peasants worse off under the feudal system than they had been before?

    At first the system would be great for peasants ... Then it gets messed up ... Vassals were expected to perform various duties in exchange for their own land, so they could be forced to join the Army (Like in Feudal Japan), or forced to give theirs weeks worth of food the authorities.
